History
The Metropolitan Calgary Foundation was officially created in 1962 through an Order in Council under the Senior Citizens' Housing Act. The mandate then and now is to provide subsidized affordable safe and approriate housing to Calgary seniors on behalf of the Province of Alberta and the City of Calgary.
MCF's origins may be traced to the late 1950's, however, when a group of civic-minded church and business leaders in Calgary began to discuss the shortage of housing for seniors in their community. The Bow Valley Foundation was formed and the first buildings were built on land donated by the City of Calgary on the site of the current Aspen Lodge and Bow Valley Cottage Units. These were the original "flat tops", so called because of the roof design, constructed for the Bow Valley Foundation that were passed to MCF in 1962. From these modest beginnings the Foundation has now grown to be one of the leading providers of subsidized senior's housing in Calgary.
These were the first of the now hundreds of homes in supportive living lodge style and independent living units MCF Housing for Seniors now provides in various locations throughout the city of Calgary. |
